Why does’t my insurance company believe me? (And why should I be treated like a criminal?)

Hi Steve Lazarus here once more with a question that is very commonly asked.

We hear this a lot: “I’ve been loyally paying my insurance company for years and I thought they were on my side. Why don’t they believe me now that I need their help?’’
There are a few reasons why your insurance company is fighting you.

The first is that, when push comes to shove, insurance companies are businesses. They have shareholders and governing boards to please, and that means trying to cut costs and increase profits.

One way to do that is to pay out fewer claims, or significantly reduce claim spend, so they will often deny claims just to see who will fight back. The harsh reality is that for companies this size, it can be cheaper to pay legal fees than to pay claims.

The second reason is that they’re really are fraudulent claims out there. Claim rejection is unfortunately a natural reaction over time to people trying to play the system and fleece Insurers. You only have to read the news each day to see the latest scam. The best thing you can do is simply tell the truth about your case.

The third reason is that, often, the insurance Loss Adjusters appointed by your Insurers, are overworked, underpaid, and fielding calls all day from people who are stressed out and don’t know where to go.

In general, insurance companies hope to spend the minimum on each case so that they can move on to the next one. The result is an insurance company that seems cold and emotionless. In reality, it’s full of people who have been trained to try to keep the business profitable.
